A quick, simple google search of those two terms, Elon Musk and Twitter, looked like the picture to the left a few days ago. Elon Musk had made headlines recently due to his offer to buy Twitter for $43 billion, or $54.20 per share (Manfredi, 2022). He has since practically closed the deal, just waiting on an official sign off from shareholders and regulators (Duffy, 2022). A quote from Musk has bounced around in almost every article published on this topic over the last few days; “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.” There are many opinions about how private ownership of Twitter will affect and change the platform, some say for the better in the name of free speech and some say for the worst in regards to hate speech.
