From independent country music critic Grady Smith to generic country radio, I delved into the top country songs released this week and the general trends/opinions surrounding subgenres. Country music has long since been a staple of the American identity, though it is not everyone’s cup of tea. Today, there are multiple subgenres of country music including Texas, pop, indie, folk, and even rock. Many individuals do not count certain subgenres as traditional country music because of the variation in style. While traditional country music does exist, our society progresses and ages alongside an inevitable development of new styles and interpretations of country music. Koe Wetzel is Texas-country. Zach Bryan is indie-country. Kelsea Ballerini is pop-country. All sub-genres exist under the name of country, but people will always be entitled to their hot takes and personal opinions.
