NC STUDY center intern

As a paid intern at the NC Study Center, I clock between eight-ten hours a week working. I am one of a few interns that are the face of the study center during the evenings after the full-time staff finish their days at 5:00PM. We welcome students between 5-10:00PM, keep the space tidy, keep food and drinks stocked, and clean up and close the center down at the end of the day.

I am also part of the volunteer hospitality team at the North Carolina Study Center. We meet regularly to plan events, shop for supplies beforehand, and then run the event. Additionally, we advertise online and by word of mouth to the students of UNC Chapel Hill. I have helped design digital advertisements, cook, and helped host for multiple hospitality events throughout the academic school year.

courier

I work as a third-party courier for Eurofins. I pick up DNA samples from four locations every weekday. I collect data from each sample, package and deliver samples to UPS, and send the recorded data to my supervisor.

Hostess

Working for six months as a hostess at Kipos Greek Taverna, I was responsible for "running the board," making reservations, taking to-go orders, seating customers, and managing wait-times.

I often answered phone calls, answering random questions, explaining the menu, and solving everyday problems.

As one of the senior hostesses my last three months of working, I often managed angry customers, mediating between them and management, in-person and over the phone. I also helped train five new hostesses during my time at Kipos; and I frequently communicated and explained with all customers Covid accommodations, weather restrictions for our outdoor seating, and special event scheduling conflicts, such as college graduations and private parties.

Camp counselor

During the end of high school, I worked over the summer at TVR and it changed my life. I went from an extremely quiet, dependent individual to a well-spoken, independent person. Growing up, I always had people to lean on, but as a counselor at TVR, I was in charge of leading a group of kids. Those kids needed me to step up and become their leader. TVR provided me an opportunity to embrace many natural qualities I already possessed but had never needed to tap into.

I learned how to be an inclusive, encouraging leader, how to work with other people of all ages, how to be a dependable teammate, how to be flexible to changing circumstances, and how to engage with people of all backgrounds.

I also learned a few practical skills like taking inventory, restocking products, leading massive group activities, and performing daily tasks to keep the ranch up-and-running.
